Getting started

How long does it take to set up?
Telegram takes about five minutes — create a bot via @BotFather, paste the token into tunaa, and you're live. The website widget is two lines of code. WhatsApp Business API requires Meta approval which typically takes 24–72 hours, but you can start with Telegram immediately while that processes.
Do I need a developer?
No. Connecting channels, uploading your knowledge base, and customising the bot are all done through the tunaa dashboard — no code required. The website widget is a copy-paste snippet. The only exception is WhatsApp Business API setup, which requires a Facebook Business Manager account.
What information does the bot need to answer questions?
You upload your FAQs, product or service details, pricing, policies, and any other information your customers typically ask about. The bot reads this knowledge base and answers accurately from it — it doesn't make things up. The richer and more specific your knowledge base, the better the bot's answers.
Can I try tunaa before paying?
Yes — every plan includes a 7-day free trial. No credit card required. You can connect a channel, upload your knowledge base, and test the bot with real customers before committing.

Channels

Which channels does tunaa support?
Telegram, WhatsApp Business API, Instagram DMs, and your website via the embeddable widget. Telegram is the fastest to connect. WhatsApp requires Meta API approval. Instagram requires a Facebook Business account. The website widget works on any website with two lines of code.
Can the same bot run on multiple channels?
Yes. One knowledge base powers all channels. A customer messaging on Telegram and a visitor chatting through your website widget both get answers from the same source. You manage everything from one dashboard.
What is the website widget?
It's a chat button that appears in the corner of your website. Visitors click it, fill in their name and phone, and start chatting with your AI agent directly from your site. Sessions are real-time via WebSocket — messages appear instantly. You embed it by pasting two lines of code before the closing </body> tag.
Does WhatsApp really require API approval? How long does it take?
Yes — to send messages programmatically on WhatsApp, businesses need access to the WhatsApp Business API through Meta. This requires a verified Facebook Business Manager account. Approval typically takes 24–72 hours for businesses with existing verification, longer for new accounts. Telegram has no such requirement, which is why we recommend starting there.
Can customers initiate conversations, or do they have to come to me?
On Telegram and WhatsApp, customers message your bot link directly — you share the link and they tap to start a conversation. On the website widget, visitors open the chat from your site. On Instagram, customers DM your account. In all cases, the customer initiates — this is a requirement of all messaging platforms to prevent spam.

The AI

How does the AI know what to say?
tunaa uses a technique called Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). When a customer sends a message, the AI searches your knowledge base for the most relevant information, then constructs an accurate, natural-sounding response using that information. It doesn't guess or fabricate — it answers from what you've uploaded.
What happens when the bot doesn't know the answer?
If the question falls outside your knowledge base, the bot says so clearly and offers to connect the customer with a human. It doesn't make up answers. This is by design — a confident wrong answer is worse than an honest admission of uncertainty.
Can the bot handle multiple languages?
Yes. The bot detects the customer's language and responds in kind. It handles English, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Pidgin out of the box. You don't need to create separate knowledge bases per language.
What are AI coins?
Each plan includes a monthly allocation of AI coins — the currency for AI processing. One coin roughly equals one message exchange (a customer message + the bot's response). When you run low, you can buy top-ups without upgrading your plan. Coins reset monthly. Unused coins don't roll over.
Will the bot ever pretend to be human?
No. tunaa's bots are transparent about being AI. If a customer asks whether they're talking to a human or a bot, the bot answers honestly. This is a deliberate design decision — customers who know they're talking to AI and still get good answers trust the business more than customers who feel deceived.

Human handoff & agents

What happens when a customer wants to speak to a human?
When a customer says "transfer to agent", "speak to a human", or similar phrases, the bot escalates the conversation. You (and any agents you've added) receive an email notification with the visitor's contact details and the full conversation context. You then reply directly from the tunaa dashboard.
How do agents reply to customers?
Agents reply through the tunaa conversations inbox. For widget conversations, replies are delivered to the visitor's chat in real-time. For Telegram and WhatsApp, replies are sent to the customer on their platform. The agent can also type 'resolve' or click the Resolve button to close the conversation and return it to the bot.
What if no agent responds after handoff?
If offline fallback is enabled (it is by default), the widget shows the visitor a message after a set timeout (5 minutes by default) confirming that the team will follow up using the contact details already collected. The lead is not lost — the visitor's name, phone, and email are already captured.
Can I add team members?
Yes. You can add agents to your business from the Agents section of the dashboard. Each agent gets their own login and can view and reply to escalated conversations. Admins can manage team members; agents handle conversations only. Agent seats are included per plan — 1 on Starter, 3 on Pro, 10 on Growth.

Pricing & billing

How much does tunaa cost?
Starter is ₦10,000/month (Telegram + website widget, 1,000 AI coins, 1 agent seat). Pro is ₦25,000/month (adds WhatsApp, 5,000 AI coins, 3 seats, removes tunaa branding). Growth is ₦40,000/month (all channels including Instagram, 15,000 AI coins, 10 seats). All plans include a 7-day free trial.
What happens if I run out of AI coins?
You can purchase top-up packs from the billing page at any time — no forced plan upgrade. The bot will notify you when coins are running low. If coins reach zero, the bot will politely tell customers that it's temporarily unavailable and ask them to leave their contact details.
Is there a contract or minimum commitment?
No. tunaa is billed monthly. You can cancel at any time from the billing page. There are no setup fees, no exit fees, and no minimum contract length.
Can I switch plans?
Yes, at any time. Upgrading takes effect immediately. Downgrading takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle.

Security & privacy

Is customer data safe?
Yes. tunaa is built in compliance with Nigeria's Data Protection Act (NDPA). Customer conversations are stored securely, access is restricted to the business owner and their designated agents, and data is never sold or shared with third parties. You can review our full privacy policy for details.
Does the bot handle credit card numbers safely?
Automatically. If a customer shares a card number in chat — which they sometimes do — tunaa detects and masks it before saving or displaying it. The masked format shows only the last 4 digits (e.g. ****-****-****-8736). This protects both your customers and your business.
Can I block spammers?
Yes. From the Widget tab in your business settings, you can block specific IP addresses. From the conversations inbox, you can block a specific visitor's session with one click. Blocked visitors cannot initiate new widget chats.
Can I control when the widget is visible?
Yes. The chat availability schedule lets you set specific days and hours when the widget launcher is visible. Outside those hours, the widget hides automatically. This is useful if you have someone actively responding to chats during business hours and want to set clear expectations.

Customisation

Can I customise how the widget looks?
Yes. You can set your bot name, brand colour (used for the launcher button and chat bubbles), and upload a logo that appears in the widget header. These are all configured from the Widget tab in your business settings.
Can I remove the 'Powered by tunaa' badge?
The badge is shown on the Starter plan. Upgrading to Pro or Growth removes it.
Can I set up automatic responses for common questions without the AI?
You can add canned responses — pre-written replies your agents can insert with one click when responding in the inbox. These are different from the AI's knowledge base responses. The AI handles automated replies; canned responses are for human agents who want to reply quickly without retyping common answers.
Can the bot proactively open a conversation?
Yes. Proactive triggers let the widget auto-open after a visitor has been on your site for a set number of seconds (default 8 seconds). You can also set a custom greeting message that appears when the widget opens. This is configurable per business from the Widget settings.

Still have questions?
Ask the bot.
